Drake Bay Fishing
Drake Bay and the Osa Peninsula is one of the most amazing fishing destinations you can possibly find. Located in the close neighborhood of several river mouths, our home port is only 12 miles away from the well-known Caño Island. The massive reef system of the island offers ideal trolling bottom fishing conditions.
We usually go offshore fishing at about 15-25 miles from shore. We always go right there, where the big fish are, even if we have to sail 25 miles for that. Fortunately, the waters around Drake Bay are calm, so the ride is actually enjoyable and comfortable.
Since we are near a wide variety of waters, we are able to offer you custom trips to match your specific preferences and your desired type of fishing. If you want, you can go fishing for Roosterfish using live bait, go bottom fishing for big Grouper and Snappers, or troll for big pelagic species such as Yellow Fin, Wahoo, Big Eye Tuna, Black, Blue and Striped Marlin, and Mahi-Mahi fish. If you prefer fly fishing for these species, we can arrange a ride for you.
Drake Bay, Unique Fishing Destination
We spend almost all of our days on the water, so we’ve developed a good knowledge of what kind of fish is biting and where. We also know that fishing success depends a great deal on the moon phase, the season, and the tide schedule.
Captain Willy takes all these details into consideration when searching for the best place to go and the best fish species to target. If, for instance, you want to catch Sailfish, the best time of year is between January and April. From May to September, you’ll have great opportunities to catch Marlin, Wahoo, and Mahi-Mahi.
If you’d rather go for Roosterfish, Tuna, Mackerel, or Snapper, you can come whenever you want, as these species are here for you all year round. Nevertheless, keep in mind that nobody would be able to promise you a certain type of catch. Just come and enjoy the pleasure of fishing, without having a specific type of catch in mind.
One of the most exciting adventures we offer is to seek for the impressive tuna gatherings that swim offshore. If you are a passionate angler, come here to cast big poppers and topwater bait and catch this fish, if your rod is strong enough to pull it out of the water. This is an adventure every angler should experience at least once in a lifetime.
Catching big Roosterfish is another thing we are very good at. We regularly catch and release 50+ lbs fish. Some of our clients have caught Roosterfish that was nearly equal to the world record. We use medium weight spinning rods to catch this kind of fish. The fight is truly impressive and well worth it.
At Fish Drake Bay we take pride in offering our clients one of a lifetime experiences rather than basic fishing trips. Our Captain and the entire crew are on a mission to offer all clients memorable moments and a great time. If you want to see what our clients think about our trips, head over to Tripadvisor and check out some of their reviews. We can’t wait to take you on an unforgettable fishing trip!
We strive to be your one of a kind fishing destination in Costa Rica!
At the beginning of this year, we’ve got a bit more rain than usual and temperatures below the normal average. Cooler water is great for fishing, so we’ve got quite a blast so far. Thankfully, Drake Bay is an amazing place for fishing, with lots of opportunities just outside the bay. Besides, we boast stunning scenery you’ll never forget! Our bordering lands won’t be developed, so you’re always going to enjoy nature at its full, beaches, and forests rather than cars, condos, and concrete buildings.
Furthermore, the pristine Cano Island is only 12 miles away. It helps to hold fish, any angler knows that. Even if you prefer to stay in or near the shore you’ll find great fishing opportunities here. You’ll be able to catch Grouper, Snapper, Pompano, Amberjack, and a special variety of Jacks. In fact, many anglers coming here prefer to try their hand at Roosterfish. Strong and beautiful, this fish offers an amazing fishing experience each and every time. Since there’s no fishing pressure here, we can tell you that this is one of the best places in the world for this activity in terms of both quantity and size.
In March and April, the number of Marlin and Sailfish will be on the rise. The Tuna bite offshore is also pretty impressive. Even if you don’t like fishing, you’ll find something cool to do in Drake Bay. Activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, and horseback riding are waiting for you.
